Featuring Stephen McKinley Henderson
Stephen has worked on stages throughout the United States, abroad, on Broadway, off-Broadway, in television and film. His OBIE and LUCILLE LORTEL awards are for outstanding lead actor in Stephen Adley Guirgis’, Between Riverside and Crazy. The play moved from the Atlantic Theater Co. in 2014 to Second Stage Theater, 2015, and received The Pulitzer Prize for Drama that season. Considered among the celebrated interpreters of playwright August Wilson’s work, Stephen received a Tony nomination and the Richard Seff Award for his performance as Bono in the 2010 revival of FENCES with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. His film and television work includes the Paramount feature film of FENCES directed by Mr. Washington, and for which Stephen received a VIRTUOSO award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Other credits are the debut season of Aaron Sorkin’s HBO series, NEWSROOM; Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN for DreamWorks; Tower Heist for Imagine/Universal; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for Warner Brothers; Red Hook Summer (A Spike Lee Joint); and Everyday People for HBO Films. Stephen’s roles range from Van Helsing in, Dracula, The Musical at The Belasco Theater, directed by Des McAnuff to Pontius Pilate in the LAByrinth production of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at The Public Theater, directed by Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Mr. Henderson has a Drama Desk, an Obie, and an Audelco award as a member of the Outstanding Ensemble of the 2000 New York season for August Wilson’s, Jitney, as well as a Los Angeles NAACP Theatre Award and a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his performance as Turnbo in that production. He is a retired Professor and former Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance for the State University of New York at Buffalo; also a member of the LAByrinth Theater Company, The Actor’s Center, and a Fox Foundation Fellow. On May 19, 2017, Stephen delivered the commencement address at The Juilliard School and received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts.
